Bruges - medieval city of canalsKnown as the Venice of the North |
|
Founded in 851, Bruges developed by the 15th century into one of the most important trading centres of north west Europe. During this golden age Bruges prospered from the production of a wide range of luxury goods. The House of Burgundy, rulers of Bruges, were famous for their patronage of arts and culture, including the painters Jan van Eyck and Hans Memling. The gradual silting up of the river at the beginning of the 20th century caused a slow decline of the city resulting in Bruges being largely passed by industrial development. Bruges is now a virtually intact historic city reflecting this golden age with many museums including the history of chocolate, diamond production and Flemish painting. |
or in summer by boat. Excursions are possible for WW1 battlefields tour, Ypres and the Last Post ceremony. In the summer you can enjoy the best ice creams and sorbet at fantastic beaches on the Belgian coast at Knokke. |
